In 1897, the electron was first identified by:

  • (A) James Maxwell
  • (B) J.J. Thomson
  • (C) Michael Faraday
  • (D) John Dalton
Several historians of science date the discovery of the electron to distal 1897. ; J. J. Thomson made this discovery. He made experiments utilizing cathode rays in vacuum tube and by observations and mathematical determination, he realized that cathode rays were negatively charged particles that he referred to as ‘corpuscles’ though they are now referred to as electrons. Thomson’s work was rather revolutionary because it questioned the classical point of view on the atom as an unchangeable particle. His discovery to some extent can be considered as the creation of the fundamentals of the modern atomic theory.
