Pandemic diseases:

- A disease which affects two or more countries or even continents.

- The 1918 Influenza pandemic was the most severe pandemic in recent history. It was caused by H1 N1 virus with genes of avian origin (The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States).

- In 1983, Luc Montagnier’s team at the Pasteur Institute in Paris discovered HIV-1.

- In Africa, HIV virus causes AIDS had jumped from chimpanzees to humans in the 20 th century.

- HIV originated in Africa and spread to the United States via Haiti between 1966 and 1972.
Endemic diseases:

- This kind of disease prevalent in a particular region and more or less confined to a population / area because of prevailing conditions that promote the disease.
Epidemic diseases:

- A disease simultaneously affects a large number of people in an area.

- A violent outbreak of a disease affecting several people in a given time and place e.g. outbreak of cholera or malaria.
