The 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature went to Abdulrazak Gurnah. The Swedish Academy described his writing as 'a merciless and compassionate penetration of the effects of the colonial encounter -- between cultures and continents -- in which committed resistance is combined with futile despair. Many of his novels depict the difficult circumstances faced by Africans living in a nation still under colonial rule, and as refugees from their native lands.
